Are you looking for a wonderful and fun project to use all your scraps in, if you are, you might want to continue reading.
Last week I was looking at one of the vintage quilt lists and I ran across an antique quilt that belongs to Julie Silber. She is a collector of antique quilts and has a business called Julie Silber Quilts. The quilt that I saw contains large hexagons that were made of three 60° diamonds. I thought what a wonderful way to use up scraps so I went to the fabric store and found a 60° diamond ruler, used a half off coupon and paid $3.50. I’m sure that most of you have some type of 60° ruler in your ruler collection, also fine to use a plastic template.
Found an old phone book and started tracing the diamonds and used that as my foundations. Just started laying the pieces right sides together until I covered the entire diamond.
One nice thing about the ruler is it also gives you the seam allowance which made it really easy to join the diamonds to make the hexagons. You can draw on the actual sewing lines to follow . You need to make three diamonds for each hexagon.
Mark the seam allowance line on each diamond.
Join the three diamonds together as in the following diagrams.
Going to be one of the projects that I work on throughout this year, if you have a lot of scraps and want to have some fun, feel free to join me. If you have any questions, just let me know.
Thank you Julie Silber for letting me share this block..
Happy Quilting,
Rosemary
rosemary, how fun! i might even try it!!
Interesting idea!. Thanks for the detailed story. I’ll be watching.
Very clever….as to be expected. How big is one side of the diamond? It would e nice to get rid of some of these scraps!
Each side is about 4 inches and the block measures about 7 x 7.5
What a wonderful idea Rosemary. Do you join all those “hexies” together or are you going to put a sort of sashing in between?
Great idea Rosemary! I already have too many projects started so this one will have to wait. Bring your progress along to retreat so we can all see how much you’ve gotten completed. Blessings, Gretchen
What size are your blocks. You always come up with the most fun ideas to deal with scraps. I need to just “do it”. My problem is trying to do scrappy! the design always gets in the way of color!
That is great! I have a large diamond template I could use and lots of civil war scraps. I’ll be watching! I am interested in how you are going to put them together into a quilt. Will you be bringing this to the retreat?
Thank you for the “new” block idea using scraps. I have accumulated a lot of scraps this year and was wondering how to use them in a new way. This really caught my eye. I’ve been working on Lucy Boston’s Patchwork of the Crosses quilt the past two years, so the hexagon shape is very familiar to me. I look forward to spending time using this idea as an ongoing project for who knows how long.
Loved my $10 books I recently ordered from you. I have spent several hours by the fire just admiring all the new patterns and the stories. My dad was in the 10th Mt Division during WW II and I really enjoyed those stories. My oldest son is a Civil War buff and I will find a few blocks to make him a quilt in the new future using the ideas from the Civil War book. Enjoy all your post. Thanks for taking the time to keep us updated on your projects. It makes me feel as though I am not the only one keeping several things going at once! Stay warm. Our temps here in NW Ga will be in the 60’s the next few days. Love it!!
